Release 20200508

Dear LCO collaborators,

This morning the government reported 1,391 cases of COVID-19, 1,183 with symptoms and 208 asymptomatic. The last 8 days of infections represent almost 40% of the total cases since the arrival of the pandemic in Chile two months ago, specifically on March 3. During May, 67 people have died, equivalent to 22.7% of the total for the whole period.

This significant increase in reported cases in the country has led us to extend the closure of the Las Campanas Observatory until at least June 1, 2020. We will continue to monitor the situation and update information on the reopening of the observatory on 22 May.

It is very important that we all follow the recommendations to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and stay in good health. I appreciate your cooperation and willingness to overcome this situation.

Best regards,

Leopoldo Infante Lira

Director Las Campanas Observatory
