Support Astronomer
Astronomer, Master and/or PhD in Astronomy, Physics, Astrophysics or related sciences, with fluent oral/written English and professional experience, to carry out astronomical observations at Las Campanas Observatory, assisting the remote observation operations processes developed by external astronomers in the twin 6.5 mts. Magellanic telescopes. The position is at Las Campanas Observatory, located 160 kms. north of La Serena, in 8x6 night shifts, fixed-term contract one year and requires residence in III or IV Region.

SUMMARY:
Mission Statement:
To assist in the processes of remote observation operations at the Magellan telescopes developed by external astronomers, in order to maintain a similar efficiency to in situ astronomical observations.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:
- To carry out in situ (Magellan telescopes) astronomical observations that include all the remote operations processes for external astronomers.
- To observe, using telescopes and systems attached to the telescopes - at night - to allow remote astronomers to observe.
- Maintain fast and fluent communications in English, mainly in oral form, with remote astronomers (international observers).
- Interact fluently with the remote observers and participate in the resolution of instrumentation, operation and failure problems.
- Support, if necessary, in the diagnosis and resolution of problems that may arise during the operation.
- Monitor during night-time observation the operation of the systems in relation to their observation process.
- To register and periodically report to remote astronomers the work carried out in their task.
- Collaborate occasionally in the installation of equipment, instruments and accessories.
- Participate, eventually, in the elaboration and revision of procedures.
- Occasionally handle cryogenic liquids.
- Performance in night shifts of 8x6.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
- Astronomer, Master and/or PhD in Astronomy, Physics, Astrophysics or related sciences.
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in astronomical observation in Magellanic or similar telescopes.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, both in Spanish and English.
- Valid class B driver's license.
- High orientation to solve remote astronomer requirements.
- Residence accredited in III or IV Region only, for contingency reasons COVID-19.
