Visit Arrangements - Important Information

All observers and visitors traveling to the Las Campanas Observatory are required to fill out and submit the following form at least 2 weeks in advance (one per person).

planetObservers Visitors:

  • Permission must be obtained from the Director's office for more than two observers per telescope.
  • If observing, make sure you also fill out an instrument setup request form for your instrument.
  • Observers from Carnegie and Chilean institutions are not charged for lodging and meals.
  • All observers should refer to the Onsite Observer Guide.

engineeringEngineering Visitors:

  • Permission must be obtained from the Director's office at least 1 month in advance.
  • The engineering work plan of activities must be sent via email to LCO_assistants@carnegiescience.edu.

groupsOther Visitors:

  • Please indicate the Visit Purpose and Visit sponsor name

Why do we need this information? We collect your travel details to ensure proper coordination and timing. For example, if your La Serena departure flight is at 3:00 PM and you want to leave LCO at 1:30 PM, you won't make your flight (minimum 2 hours travel time required). This information helps us provide better service and avoid travel conflicts.
Regular Schedule: Monday-Friday we have scheduled transport at specific times (varies by day). Weekends require special transport via external company.
Special Transport: Available any time between 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM (winter) / 7:00 PM (summer). Cost: $160,000 CLP per vehicle.

Payment Information

Please be advised that if you are expected to pay for your Room and Board, we can only accept payment in cash, check or credit/debit card. Explicitly, we cannot accept wire transfers since these imply extra charges to us (and you). See the lco.cl web page on instructions to visitors, in order to determine if you are expected to pay.
