The Code of Conduct of the Carnegie Science Las Campanas Observatory (LCO) encompasses six principles aligned with the institutional mission to foster, in the broadest and most liberal manner, the analysis, research, discovery, and application of knowledge for the advancement of humanity. The policies, guidelines, and procedures that support Carnegie’s Code of Conduct provide guidance for responsible decision-making, respectful treatment of others, acting with honesty, and approaching our work with professionalism and seriousness. As members of the Carnegie community, it is our obligation to know and comply with our Code of Conduct and to demonstrate at all times the highest standards in the performance of the responsibilities entrusted to us on behalf of the Institution.
Principles
Support our mission: We collaborate across borders to explore today’s most compelling scientific questions. We seek excellence in all areas of our work. We cultivate an inclusive environment in which all voices are welcome, where novel and bold thinking is encouraged, and where respectful debate of differing ideas and opinions is fostered.
Respect one another: We treat all members of the Carnegie community with kindness, fairness, and impartiality, regardless of position, role, or seniority. We recognize and value each person’s unique skills and perspectives. We promote and support a culture of fairness in access to opportunities.
Act with integrity: We take full responsibility for the integrity of our work and its dissemination. We are truthful and accurate and do not engage in manipulation in our professional conduct throughout our research. During working hours or when representing Carnegie, including when using technology and social media, we are respectful and do not use harmful, intolerant, defamatory, threatening, offensive, or obscene language.
Promote freedom of inquiry: We encourage curiosity and exploration and strive to create an environment in which creativity can flourish. We respect other viewpoints and promote a culture of rigorous research and collaboration.
Follow our Code and our policies: We commit to being accountable for upholding the highest standards set forth in the Code. Our Code and our policies, guidelines, and procedures are fundamental to our commitment to making Carnegie a community capable of leading with respect, integrity, and professionalism.
Report misconduct and concerns: We commit to addressing and speaking up about issues. We confront difficult matters promptly and raise the questions and concerns we experience personally or receive from others. We do not tolerate retaliation against individuals who report concerns in good faith or who participate in investigations in accordance with the administrative procedures set forth in LCO’s Internal Regulations and applicable national law.
Our Code, policies, guidelines, and procedures are vital components of our commitment to pursue the most compelling science and to make Carnegie a more inclusive environment in which we treat others with dignity, respect, and fairness. We express our commitment to the Code by being accountable for maintaining the highest standards of compliance and ethics. As members of the Carnegie community, we all share equal responsibility for addressing and reporting violations of the Code of Conduct.
Guidance and Reporting of Misconduct
Ways to report questions or concerns:
In accordance with LCO’s Internal Regulations, reports should be made to one’s Direct Supervisor, Safety and Security Officer, Administration and People Management Office, and/or the Director of the Institution, following the procedures established in those regulations and applicable law. The Institution will strive to handle reports discreetly and with due respect for the reporter’s privacy, taking into account the need to investigate and take appropriate action in accordance with its internal rules and the Labor Code. Concerns must be reported in good faith.
No Retaliation
Carnegie’s LCO prohibits retaliation against any person who, in good faith, reports a violation of any of its policies and guidelines, files a complaint, cooperates with an investigation, or seeks guidance on ethical and compliance matters. The regulatory framework on this subject is set forth in LCO’s Internal Regulations and applicable national law.
