How to reset a linux workstation

If a linux workstation becomes unresponsive, it will not update the screen, it will not respond to mouse input, it will not respond to keyboard input, (try CTRL-ALT-F1, CTRL-ALT-BS, CTRL-ALT-DEL) and it will not respond to a ping from another workstation.
The only alternative is to press the reset button.
Before doing that, check to see if the power supply has shut down, or if any of the fans have stopped turning.
It may be useful to check the CPU temperatures.
During the reboot, press the DEL key to enter the setup menu, look for the CPU temperatures in the menu, and record them.
