How to kill a process

  • To kill a process on a Linux workstation, execute the following shell command:

ps auxwww

Look for the name of the process that you wish to kill on the right.
Note the PID number of that process that appears in the second column.

  • Then execute the following shell command:

kill -KILL <PID>

You can only kill processes that you own.

Example:
[skip@kenny ~]$ ps auxwww
...
skip     10633  0.0  0.5 204060 748 ?        S    12:06   0:02 java_vm
...
[skip@kenny ~]$ kill -KILL 10633
