How to install/uninstalling MIKE-FIBERS

  1. Set rotator -7 degrees to install Fiber Adapter or Telecentrator. MIKE must be left on observing floor to have easy access to de dewars and handling the crane.


  2. Remove from its position the guider and inner baffle. Left on the outer one that protects the encoders. The NASE guider must be left on observing floor.


  3. Put pins on rotator to align Adapter. Those pins are actually aluminium screws which can be removed once all other screws are in place.


  4. Install red fiber head or shoe, then install the blue one. The blue shoe due to the position when is unused, stress the fibers. So, is better to check the focus of the fiber before starting the first night. The screws are stored on the shoe holder. Remove this metallic (brass) piece before rotating the instrument.


  5. Remove from MIKE the CCD mounting plates. They must be replaced by the ones which are stored normally in boxes.


  6. Since the new MIKE’s electronic controller is wider than the previous one the fibers can be damaged if it stays like this. You can place it hanging from the lower two screws to have it on and avoiding stressing the wires.



  1. Every CCD has a label indicating their respective orientations. They must be rotated (-90degs.) respect to the normal configuration. Make sure both are in right position.


  2. Connect the S-H controller via ethernet to outlet #43. Flat field lamp controller to outlet 44. Focus controller to outlet #27. In the equipment room connect #44 to #27.


  3. Open mikeGUI. And then take biases to check image transference. While fibers are not inserted in any plate yet, is possible to take images to verify the spectra are transmited or whether the fibers are OK.


  4. Open flampgui located into /home/birk/FLAMPS/ to start up lamps controller. This option is no longer available since the computer and operative system were changed. Instead open an xterm in the observer’s account and type lampgui. Check with a spectrum if they work properly.


  5. Set on TCS the following series of parameters:


    To configure the cameras (guiding = #1, active optics for MIKE-fiber (NASE):

    In the TCS:

    11. Exit the GPC program. By editting GPC.INI search for port definitions and change NASE=6( MIKE) to NASE=0 (MIKE-FIBERS). GPC can be restarted later on.


12. Open an xterm in Operators Machine (VICUNA) and type the following command: /home/skip/software/eds/edsshmnc/gpceds.csh 2 0 0 0 1 Where the usage is: gpceds.csh probe x y filter mask moving


      If not running a error message will be displayed on IRAF:”**no mask**”.

      13.- On IRAF terminal set the file hrc12 as follow:

  • tableratio    0.7622 14. Measure the pupil center and change the values for npx and npy in hrc12.
15. In GUANACO start the MIKE-FIBER panel by moving into directory                                    /home/skip/software/tcl/ and type mikef2.tcl. This option is no longer available since computers and operative systems were change. Instead type in an xterm directly in the user’s account the command mikef. The panel will show up. 16. Make a new template. From MIKE-FIBER panel click on LED and S-H. This should give you the image of the mask on GCAM#2. From there send an image to VICUNA. 17. Do not use mikecaloop.csh with this Fiber Adapter. 18. On mgtcs set by default EQU -7.5. Better if done on user catalog. This angle set the rotator to zero position or with the periscope vertically. 19. On GCAM#2 appears a rounded area were the pointing must be done. Move the sightbox to center position to check pointing and S-H mask. Set sightbox right in the middle of the aperture. 20. On GCAM#1 there are two circular areas. Rotate the instrument until both guiding stars be well centered. As well, look the four small holes at the bottom, they should be as bright as they can in order to make sure the alignement is right. 21. Once MIKE-FIBER is done, all parameters must be restored to the normal values: 22       In the TCS:

    23. Start the GPC program. Then edit the file in the Operator Machine (VICUNA):

  • or just unlearn hrc12
24. Measure the pupil center and enter in npx, npy. The make a new template. 25. Remove the fibres from Adapter, exchange the CCDs adapter plates and rotate  the CCDs to the normal position, being the labels indicated also on CCD's dewars. 26. Remove Fiber Adapter from NASE and unscrew the pins. Place into the rotator the inner baffle taken off previously. 27. Guider must be installed back again. The rotator must be at 0 degrees or 0.7 if MIKE is going to be installed back.
