Dark Current and Read Noise

  • Our initial study indicates that the gain is 2 electrons/ADU and the read noise is 25 electrons.

  • The dark current is less than 0.03 electrons/second. While this is relatively negligible, you will need dark frames to remove some structure in the images, particularly for short exposures and twilight flats. We recommend that you obtain darks with the same combination of exposure times and loops as your science frames.

  • The "dark filter" has been removed from PANIC (as of July 2004). To obtain a dark frame place both the Jc and H2 filters in the beam. The bandpasses of these two filters are mutually exclusive.
